d1

All editing techniques used in my music video were chosen specifically to help create and enhance the final parts in my music video, to create the message intended to create while following the client brief.

The above image shows by unedited footage and all the clips in one format before any edits and cuts have been made to the clips to create the music video itself. before nay edits and changes were made to these clips I first imported the song before adding all of the clips into the Final Cut Pro project after reviewing all the footage and deciding which clips were usable and which were not based on factors like appropriate lighting and actors potentially breaking the fourth wall when filming the footage the clips that were not usable were all put into a collective folder and the ones that were where then imported into my project . with all of the unedited footage my video came to roughly 7 minutes long meaning a lot of the clips needed to be cut down to meet the 3:45 song and match the visuals to the lyrics that I had intended in my initial shot script that was used to plan the clips. when revising the footage I  decided that a lot of my clips particularly the memories of the two girls together that I filmed will be edited to black and white and cut down to create a montage like effect of the clips together, the black and white was chosen to help create a stronger effect of emotion and strongly enhance that idea that these clips were intended to be viewed as memories and something from the past, so instead of choosing the clips to be colourful to help convey a negative emotion to the viewers and further enhance the importance and emotion of these clips. alongside adjusting the colour of these clips I also edited them together and made some of them to be a slower speed to create a montage like effect of the 'memories' making it appear to viewers to be perfected memory to my protagonist and again highlight the importance of it to viewers and the emotions and symbolic meanings behind the clips and what was In them.

When filming I was able to realise there was a certain scene that I would be unable to film myself due to the fact that it was of graves and filming that myself without official consent could have been unethical, so I used the website pexles to find myself a clip to use in this gap. I chose this website as all of the clips as all the clips and footage on the website are royalty and copyright free meaning no copyright or legislations were broken.

the theme of grief, loss and loss of innocence is a common theme in my music video. to display this i used the prop of the teddy bear frequently intending to be that representation of childhood comfort and the symbol of innocence that you can clearly see in the music video my protagonist tried so hard to cling to rather than deal with the grief and accept the innocence of life has gone. this was done through iconography and using the teddy bear as thazt symbolic image for the audience

“Childhood is not from birth to a certain age, childhood is the kingdom where nobody dies” – Edna St Vincent Millay this quote was a key thing that inspired the theme of the teddy bear in my music video again relaying the idea that childhood and youth is the kingdom and place where death doesn't exist and as death does occur people try so hard to cling to that childhood and its innocence.

To allow the viewers of the music video to relate further to the music video and the experiences more I created the sets of all the scenes and shots to be that of normal and familiar environments, so instead of using cgi or expensive locations, I used familiar locations like kitchens bedrooms and other house rooms to help create an environment that would appear to be comfortable and allow the viewer to further relate to the protagonist and the emotions and scenes portrayed through the visuals.

I included the song title in my music video so that if any viewers of the music video either on other platforms or at the music festival they will be able to find the song and explore songs similar and in the genre. the is a typical style in this genre to include the name of the song and song.

When inserting and choosing the position of the clips I decided to create a cyclical sequence in my music video and used black and white chosen memories of the two girls together to keep reminding the audience of the good memories but also to help portray to the audience that memories and the emotions including grief that my protagonist struggles with. My sequencing also signifies how those emotions are not temporary and how the smallest things can be that reminder and how the memories can be brought back to someone so easily, so by using the clips of the girls regularly I am able to create that idea.

the mise-en-scene in my music video was specifically chosen to represent the emotion and sadness in my music video, to help convey this I ensured that my characters wore clothes that reflected that emotion in the scene so if the video were to be of my protagonist upset her clothes and makeup and the lighting in that scene would reflect that by having her wear dark colours and be in a dark setting with low lighting and no harsh or bright colours.
in the clips towards the start of my music video the protagonist will be seen to wear entirely black clothing (not in flash backs) this is done to clearly display to the audience that she is in mourning using the typical colours that represent such things like pain and sadness. also in these clips will be seen the teddy bear aas again a iconography of grief and the loss of innocence that my music video is based on the idea of. the location of these scenes and the lighting was intended to create a homely and warm environment to contrast with the protagonist and make her stand out as suffering herself but to show that the world around her is not and as she might stop everything else doesn't.

the original intentions of my music video was to have multiple scenes throughout the music video from a funeral setting but i filming and the production of the tv show i thought that it would be far more effective for the music video to display emotive and relatable memories for an audience to help gain a further understanding of my protagonists friendship and some of the experiences they and together instead of more scenes if the funeral i deemed it more suited to the genre and the target audience to display memories.

m3 + m4

I created a music video for Work Song by Hozier. This song is typical of the genre soul and blues. The video typical style for this genres is a narrative and often includes deep messages and meanings with a darker/sad story line to them. the song itself the lyrics play the idea that not even death can break a relationship or bond and that even after death that indivudial can be the most important person to you. in the saying that 'no grave can hold my body down, ill crawl home to her'. to help allign with the lyrics and meaning of the song aloing with the genre of music i chose my msuic video to be an emotive narrative video that challaneged greif and displayed the loss of innocnce and pain that comes with death.

Typically, lighting in the clips and scenes are darker and softer rather than harsher lighting and brighter colours (see below) so this is something I wanted to replicate in my music video.

Camera shots and angles.
in a typical video of this genre the camera angles used are commonly close ups to convey emotion that I sued in my video to draw attention to the protagonists emotions and feelings. another common camera angle is high angle to signify vulnerability of the subject and their emotions I used this in my music video when conveying the protagonist to be feeling their emotions the heaviest or in their most vunerable state and finally a commonly seen angle in this genre over shoulder shots so that the audience feel as though they are on the journey with the protagonist/star persona and allows the audience to feel involved in the story in the video and feel as though they are there with the protagonist.

the theme of grief, loss and loss of innocence is a common theme in my music video. to display this i used the prop of the teddy bear frequently intending to be that representation of childhood comfort and the symbol of innocence that you can clearly see in the music video my protagonist tried so hard to cling to rather than deal with the grief and accept the innocence of life has gone.

Andrew Goodwin's Conventions:

in my music video to meet with Andrew Goodwin's conventions theory I have tired to incorporate clips where Visuals match music that he believes is typical to a music video.

Visuals match lyrics

in my music video to help follow Andrew Goodwins theory i attempted to incorporate scenes where the lyrics and the words of thew song match the visuals of the music video. in my song the lyrics were 'i could barely eat' to match the lyrics the visual to this clip is my protagonist going through a fridge and not being able to eat any of the food, this following Andrew Goodwins theory

Lip syncing

typically in the genre of work song music videos are often narrative and portray a story or experience with little to no performance or lip syncing so to conform to the genre there is no performance visuals in my music video

Sex sells (Male Gaze)

in the genre of music videos the songs are often emotive and have deep meanings behind them in this is often reflected in the music videos themselves so to conform to the genre and its typical styles there is no visuals to meet the male gaze as it wouldn't conform to the genre

Voyeurism

in the genre of music videos the songs are often emotive and have deep meanings behind them in this is often reflected in the music videos themselves so to conform to the genre and its typical styles there is no visuals to meet the voyeurism visuals as it wouldn't conform to the genre

Creating a star persona

in my music video I centred the focus of the storyline and the scenes on my main character helping create a star persona that would be viewed by the audience and ideally the audience will be bale to create an emotional connection or feel a sense of escapism and be able to relate to my star persona and what she was suffering from in terms of grief.

Uses and Gratifications

Personal identity

In my music video the theme of grief is portrayed often and is explored to how my star persona deals with the grief and emotions, any viewers watching the music video may be experiencing similar things and the emotions that are portrayed in the video allowing them to feel as though they can relate to the protagonist in the video much more.

Surveillance

viewers that watch the music video and are suffering the same things as the protagonist may be able to seek ideas of how to help themselves deal with their grief and potentially ways to help themselves overcome it as the protagonist does in the music video.

Social interaction

by someone watching the music video it will likely be something that people can discus and the topic of the music video being grief and something that people commonly struggle to communicate about may be overcome through people feeling encouraged and far more comfortable to discus their experiences with grief

Escapism

a viewer may potentially be going through the same or very similar experiences to the protagonist in my music video meaning by watching the video and consuming the visuals it may allow them to escape their grief and the struggles that thy face by souly focusing on the protagonist an d their emotions rather than the viewers own  - may be experiencing the same as protagonist and consume video to escape what is going on in their everyday life.

A main factor from the client brief is that my music video didn't exceed the BBFC rating or higher than 12A to ensure i met this requirement i ensured that all of the music was entirely appropriate and didn't contain any inappropriate language. therefore the audio of the music video conformed to the BBFC rating. alongside this all of the visuals and clips in my music video were entirely appropriate not containing any physical violence or suggestion towards substance abuse within my storyline.

another key requirement of the client brief is that the visuals fit the entire duration of the song the song i chose being work song by Hozier lasts 3:44 seconds so when filming i ensured that i had obtained enough footage to be able to fill the entirety of the song and its outro of the audio. in addition the client brief also stated that the clips used in the music video had to be 70% my own and given that throughout the duration of the video i only used 1 clip of sourced footage i was able to meet this client requirement.

and the final key expectation of the music video in the client brief is that is was within the conformity of the genre that the music was in and was suitable and appealed to my target audience. one way in which i ensured that i conformed to the typical style of music video is that my music video followed a narrative perspective as typically the music videos in the genre tell a story to the audience rather than perform. the plot line of my music video helped appeal to the target audience as they typically view videos and songs with emotive messages and deeper meanings behind them with symbolic imagrey and deeper messages in opposed to a performed video. viewers of the video will likley be fans of hozier and his genre so will be used to seeing videos simlar to the one i created and will be used to the commonly seen themes and emotions in the music videos.

when I finished the final product of my final music video I exported in the settings(H264 version for YouTube and ApplePros full HD master for broadcast before uploading it to YouTube as a final product.
